about

ACCORDING TO HOYLE is one night out in the Old West.
Think of this album as a western movie. I think it plays best that way.

A saloon pianist himself, our protagonist grows restless while practicing in his flat. He decides to step out but has no way of knowing the power of the night ahead.
From dusk till dawn he experiences the gamut: from brief but profound love to deep worrisome dread. He also meets a wide variety of people: men who play by no rules, a woman who's gamed the system, and a young lady who feels the same about life as he does. The latter is refreshing: together they agree to leave their problems behind and "move into the light."
Many of life's landmark highs and lows are witnessed from this one sunset to this one sunrise, underscoring the power and potential of a single night out.

Special thanks to Jim Byrne. Our daily 4-track talks are instant muse.

this album was recorded on a TASCAM 424 4-track cassette recorder

We all dream of the Tape Hiss Hall of Fame

And for those looking for a looser experience, try the 4-track. In a world that offers limitless recording options, it's inspiring to work with a machine so limiting. It asks you to take risks you ordinarily would not.
